Who is Changpeng Zhao? Convicted Binance founder and McGill graduate pardoned by Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has issued a pardon for Changpeng Zhao, the Chinese-born Canadian founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, according to a White House official. The announcement, made on Thursday, marks the latest in a series of clemency actions by the president towards figures in the cryptocurrency sector and other convicted individuals. In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had “exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.”Zhao, commonly known as CZ, resigned as the chief executive officer of Binance in November 2023 following a guilty plea to a money laundering charge in the United States. He was sentenced to four months in prison in April 2024 and completed his sentence by September of the same year. Despite this setback, Zhao remains a prominent figure in global finance.
