MUMBAI: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the ‘Tesla Experience Centre’ at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, welcoming the company’s decision to choose the city for its first centre in India.“I am happy that Tesla chose Mumbai for their first experience centre as in the design and innovation for Electric Vehicle (EV) sector, they are the world leaders,” said CM Fadnavis.“This is not just inauguration of an experience centre, but it is a statement – a statement that Tesla has arrived, a statement that Tesla has arrived in the right city and the right state. Mumbai is the entrepreneurial capital of India and not just financial, commercial and entertainment,” CM Fadnavis said during the launch.The Tesla Model Y is a compact electric SUV with a spacious interior, ample boot space, and a minimalist design. It features advanced technology such as a touchscreen interface, Autopilot driver-assistance, and over-the-air software updates. The vehicle has a range of over 500 km on a single charge and offers quick acceleration and a comfortable ride.“Mumbai stands for innovation and sustainability. As for Tesla, it’s not just a car or a car company, it’s all about design, innovation and sustainability. In 2015, when I went to US, I had my first ride in Tesla, and then I thought we need such vehicle for mobility in India. But it took 10 years for it to come to India. But we are very happy that finally you are here and people of Mumbai and across India will love Tesla. They will have one of their best markets in India,” Fadnavis further added.According to sources, Tesla may plan to set up a manufacturing plant in the near future.Fadnavis stated that the state’s EV policy encourages the manufacturing of electric vehicles. He said Maharashtra’s EV policy is the best in the country and offers incentives and improved e-charging infrastructure. Tesla is also expected to set up its own charging stations in the city. “On a single charge, you can travel over 500 km and this will reduce range anxiety,” Fadnavis added.He was accompanied by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar.Fadnavis said Tesla is also exploring other cities in India to establish similar experience zones for its car models. Sources indicated that the second such centre may come up in Delhi soon.
