Upbeat Tanya eyes bigger titles

Bengaluru: After winning the Saipan International Challenge, Karnataka shuttler Tanya Hemanth said she is growing in confidence and the youngster is keen to do well in the bigger tournaments lined up in the coming months. It was a much-needed win for the Bengaluru shuttler. Despite her hard work, she failed to get past the first round in many Super 300 events in the last 9-10 months. In between, Tanya also took a break of almost two months in March-April to focus on her BCom final year exams. “I’m thrilled to have finally broken through and clinched the title. It means a lot to me because I have worked hard for this,” Tanya told TOI from Saipan. “I am happy with the kind of progress I made in this tournament. It has given me a lot of confidence and I hope to continue with the same momentum and deliver in higher level tournaments — which is one of my goals for the rest of the season,” she added. The 21-year-old, whose previous title was the Bendigo International Challenge in Australia last Oct, is looking at the brighter picture after her latest triumph at the Northern Marianas islands. It was not an easy win though as she battled her way past three tough contests en route to the final. In the title clash, the top seed came up with a dominating show to ease past Japan’s Kanae Sakai. Tanya, who has won four international titles, trains under the guidance of Krishna Kumar at the Isports Academy here. She will be seen next in action at the Baoji Masters (Super 100) in China, starting Sept 2.“She is a good player and has some good half smashes. But when you play against quality players, you need to have more powerful smashes and speed alongside good agility. We are working towards that,” Kumar said. The city shuttler has made it a habit of winning an international title every year since 2022, but now the challenge before Tanya is to win the bigger events and make a mark in the competitive Badminton World Federation (BWF) circuit.
