Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7: Range, features, price compared
Following years of rumours and mounting excitement, Tesla has finally stepped into the Indian automobile scene. The renowned American electric vehicle manufacturer has introduced the Model Y SUV as its inaugural product for the Indian market. Simultaneously, it has launched its first retail outlet in Mumbai, strategically located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Buyers can reserve the vehicle through Tesla’s official website, with deliveries of the standard rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version scheduled to begin in the current quarter. Meanwhile, the RWD Long Range edition is expected to start reaching customers from October 2025 onwards.

The BYD Sealion too is offered in two variants – Premium and Performance priced at Rs 48.9 lakh and Rs 54.9 lakh respectively, ex-showroom.
This means the base Tesla Model Y is Rs 10.99 lakh more expensive than the Sealion Premium, while the top-spec Long Range variant costs Rs 12.99 lakh more than the Sealion Performance. Both models are being imported into India via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route, which contributes significantly to their higher price tag.Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7: DimensionsComparing the dimensions, the Sealion 7 measures 4830 mm in length, 1925 mm in width, 1620 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2930 mm. The Model Y measures 4751 mm in length, 1920 mm in width, 1624 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2891 mm. The BYD Sealion 7 is slightly larger overall when compared to the Tesla Model Y.
Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7: Battery, rangeAs mentioned before, the BYD Sealion will be offered in two variants – Premium and Performance. Both variants are powered by an 82.56 kWh battery pack, The Premium variant gets a single motor with an RWD setup and puts out 313 PS and 380 mm torque, it has a claimed range of 567 km on one full charge. The Performance variant on the other hand gets dual electric motors with AWD and puts out 530 PS of power and 630 nm torque, it has a claimed range of 542 km on one full charge.
Tesla has yet to officially reveal the exact specifications for the Model Y’s battery capacity and electric motor output for the Indian market. As for range, the Standard Model Y delivers up to 500 km of WLTP-rated driving range and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range version stretches its range to 622 km (WLTP) and completes the same sprint in a quicker 5.6 seconds. Despite the difference in battery output, both versions come with a rear-wheel-drive setup and have a claimed top speed of 201 km/h.Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7: FeaturesThe India-spec Tesla Model Y comes loaded with a host of premium features. It includes a large 15.3-inch infotainment touchscreen at the centre, ventilated and heated power-adjustable front seats, and rear seats that are both heated and electrically foldable in a two-way configuration. Passengers also get an 8-inch screen at the rear, a 9-speaker sound system, ambient interior lighting, dedicated air vents with electric controls for both front and back rows, and a panoramic glass roof. The vehicle is equipped with eight external cameras to support advanced driver-assistance functions.
The Sealion 7 is equipped with a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features include electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker audio system, a head-up display, 11 airbags, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS features such as blind spot detection, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and more
