SIT to probe NCP functionary’s murder in Mumbai | Mumbai News
Mumbai: After a huge uproar in the state Legislative Council, minister of state (home) Yogesh Kadam announced setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a senior police official to re-investigate the gruesome murder of NCP’s taluka president in Byculla in Oct 2024.Six persons were arrested so far and charged under MCOCA. However, there were allegations from opposition benches that it is a sensitive case and a sensational “political murder” in which the involvement of political persons was suspected.MLC Pankaj Bhujbal alleged that police were shielding the main culprits and there was political pressure not to arrest them. Kadam said that there was no evidence against 14-16 people named by the opposition, but they will be brought back for inquiry. The minister assured that nobody will be spared, and the culprits will be booked irrespective of political affiliations. An MLC said that the victim, Sachin Kurmi, raised his voice against social issues such as drug trafficking, gambling, and betting, and frequently lodged complaints and reports against local criminal activities through media and other channels. His outspoken role is believed by his family to be the main reason behind his murder. His wife, in the recent past, made serious allegations against certain prominent individuals in her report. The legislators demanded that there should be a ‘thorough’ probe into the role of policemen allegedly shielding some of the key accused persons in the case. “There is a demand for a thorough investigation, but there is a lack of action and delay from the authorities, leading to confusion among the public,” Bhujbal said in his calling attention motion in the council on Thursday.Kadam assured the House that the issue will be investigated by a senior police official and if families feel threatened, they may be offered protection. “We will also look into the allegations made by the family in a written complaint to the police,” he added.Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council and Shiv Sena (UBT) Leader Ambadas Danve said there were reports of attempts to destroy evidence and this should also be looked into by the SIT.
