SC not in favour of BCI’s control over law education

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday appeared at odds with the traditional control of the Bar Council of India – apex regulatory body for advocates – over the legal education system and said colleges and universities imparting degrees in law should be regulated by experts and academicians.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh asked the govt and the University Grants Commission (UGC) UGC to file separate affidavits addressing the specific issue of desirability of the BCI’s role in regulating legal education.
Senior advocate A M Singhvi welcomed the BCI’s suggestion, conveyed to the court through senior advocate Vivek Tankha, that a panel headed by an-ex CJI would examine the extent of regulatory control the council should exercise over curriculum in law colleges and universities.tnn
