Monsoon regains momentum over coastal region, likely to be active over Bengaluru by July 15 | Bengaluru News
Bengaluru: After a brief lull, monsoon has regained momentum over parts of Karnataka. Influenced by an offshore trough along the Karnataka-Maharashtra coast, parts of Karnataka, especially the coastal and Malnad regions, witnessed moderate-to-heavy rainfall from Thursday. Indicating a few more days of rainfall activity, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued very heavy rainfall (orange) and heavy rainfall (yellow) alerts for various districts, including Bengaluru.CS Patil, scientist at IMD Bengaluru, pointed out that over the next five days, there will be widespread rainfall over the coastal and Western Ghats districts of Karnataka. “Until Sunday, we’ve issued an orange alert to coastal districts and yellow alert to a few north and south-interior districts. In Bengaluru, there will be light to moderate rainfall at a few locations along with gusty winds,” he said. Patil noted that barring coastal Karnataka, monsoon has been below the normal graph in most of the hinterland districts, and this is expected to continue until July 15.Southwest monsoon is expected to resume its influence over the whole of Karnataka from July 15, according to meteorologists. “The cloudy and windy weather prevailing over most of the regions of Karnataka will pave way for intense rainfall from July 15. There are signs of the formation of depression over the Bay of Bengal region, and this is likely to influence rainfall over Bengaluru and adjoining districts from the third week of July, bringing considerable rainfall over SIK (South Interior Karnataka) districts,” Patil clarified.
