Man swindled in dating scam by woman he met on app, hotel staff in Mumbai | Mumbai News
MUMBAI: A 26-year-old man has lodged a police complaint against the staff of a popular Borivali-based restaurant for allegedly conniving with a woman to swindle him in a dating scam. The complainant had met the woman through a dating app. The MHB Colony police have registered an FIR and are investigating the matter. The complainant, a Santacruz resident who works as a manager at a private firm, said he matched with a 22-year-old woman named Disha on April 11. They exchanged phone numbers and began chatting. The following day, they decided to meet at a restaurant in Borivali, as the woman claimed she lived nearby. When the complainant arrived at the restaurant around 6 pm, the woman was already waiting. They proceeded upstairs and spent nearly two hours there, ordering liquor, a hookah pot, and energy drinks. At the end of their meal, the complainant was handed a bill of Rs 35,000. Shocked by the amount, he protested, saying it was too high. At that point, a man approached him and asked why he was delaying the payment. As pressure mounted, the complainant called the police. Meanwhile, a staff member reduced the bill to ₹30,000, and the woman offered to pay half. The staff then provided a QR code, and the complainant paid Rs 15,000. While speaking to the police, the woman claimed she had paid her share directly to the restaurant. However, upon later checking his UPI transaction history, the complainant discovered that the payment had been made to a personal UPI ID, not the restaurant’s. Suspecting collusion between the restaurant staff and the woman, he approached the MHB Colony police and filed a formal complaint.
