What should have been a pleasant trip to one of the most iconic and possibly famous golf courses in New Jersey took a tragic turn. During a sudden storm and subsequent lightning strike, a 28-year-old man was gravely injured. Friends and onlookers were surprised by the weather change. Sadly, we now have the heartbreaking news days after learning about this tragic event. The young man who was well-regarded for both his talent and his good character has died. His family, friends, and community will mourn his loss with sadness and love.
How did Simon Mariani die while golfing in New Jersey
On Monday, July 8, 2025, during a rapid storm, Simon Mariani was golfing at Ballyowen Golf Club at Hardyston, New Jersey when he was struck by lightning. He was golfing with friends when the clouds quickly turned black. Brian Delia, one of the golfers, told WABC that when the temperature changed, he began videotaping. “All of a sudden the lightning strikes and I ended the video recording,” he said.Emergency help was called right away. Other golfers and an off-duty firefighter gave first aid until paramedics arrived. Simon Mariani was then airlifted to the nearest hospital in serious condition. After fighting for six days, Simon passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2025.

Simon Mariani’s family and friends remember him as full of life and passion
Simon Mariani lived in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He returned to the University of Notre Dame in 2019 for a degree in accounting and economics, and then later in 2024 to earn an MBA. He was an associate at MTS Health Partners, Manhattan, New York City.His obituary describes him as “driven, dedicated, smart, likeable and exceptionally talented.” It also says he loved his family, sports, and the outdoors. “Simon had the heart of a champion,” it read.Crystal Springs Resort, which runs the Ballyowen course, told News 12: “The safety of our guests is one of our top priorities. Our thoughts are with the guest and his family.”Simon Mariani’s funeral will be held on Friday, July 18, in Franklin Lakes. He is still remembered by his parents, two sisters, and many loved ones.
