Corporal punishment gets Gujarat private tutor 6 months jail, Rs 1 lakh fine | India News
VADODARA: A private tuition teacher was sentenced to jail for six months and fined Rs 1 lakh for meting out corporal punishment to a 15-year-old Class 10 student, leaving the boy with severe ear injuries. A JMFC court in Vadodara passed the order Thursday.The teacher, Jasbirsinh Chauhan, ran a coaching centre. As per complaint filed by the student’s father, Tejas Bhatt, Chauhan had been tutoring his son in English and Social Science.On Dec 23, 2019, the student attended class as usual. Later that evening, he called his father asking him to bring an exam form to the coaching centre. Upon reaching the coaching centre, the boy’s parents allegedly heard someone being thrashed. Alarmed, Bhatt rushed into the classroom and found Chauhan slapping his son repeatedly on the face and ears. On being confronted, Chauhan began apologising and claimed he was punishing the boy for missing two days of classes, in which important topics had been covered.Later, the boy revealed that Chauhan had physically assaulted him on earlier occasions as well. Bhatt’s relative contacted child helpline and a formal police complaint was filed. Medical examination confirmed that the boy had sustained severe injuries — his eardrums were badly torn and bleeding.Although Chauhan made multiple attempts to apologise to the family after the assault, police arrested him in Jan 2020. After prolonged legal proceedings, court convicted him & pronounced quantum of punishment.
