Citizens plan to move court over BEST smart meters

Mumbai: Concerns were raised by activists regarding installation of smart meters in Island City, with a section of BEST electricity consumers expressing opposition and planning to move the court on the issue, reports Somit Sen. However, BEST officials maintain these meters will be advantageous for consumers, enabling daily power consumption monitoring and facilitating quicker responses to electrical disruptions.More than 3.5 lakh smart meters were installed by BEST, implying that one out of every three meters is a smart hi-tech meter in SoBo and other parts of Island City. Activist Kamlakar Shenoy alleged, “The rules mandate that each consumer must receive prior notice and be allowed to be present during installation. However, notices issued are illegal, lack essential information, and deny consumers the right to raise objections.” BEST officials denied the charge.Activist G R Vora noted, “BEST is merely fixing notice on wall or giving it to society. Society can’t give consent on behalf of consumers.” He said consumers should be given the opportunity to speak about it. A BEST representative defended the initiative, stating smart meters pose no disadvantages and enhance service delivery.
