Caretaker held for stealing jewellery, cash worth Rs 1.5 crore from employer’s house in Bengaluru | Bengaluru News
Bengaluru: A 43-year-old caretaker has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold, silver and cash worth Rs 1.5 crore from her employer’s residence in Chamarajpet. The accused, identified as Uma, hails from Chamarajanagar and was employed through a private agency that provides domestic workers and caretakers.The complaint was filed by 72-year-old Radha RK , who lives in a large family home on 4th Cross, Chamarajpet, along with with her elder sister Sujatha, younger sister Swarnalatha and family, and brother Ramachandra Shekhar and family. The family jointly runs a private security agency based in Nagarathpet.Sujatha had been bedridden for nearly eight months due to health complications, prompting the family to hire Uma three months ago to take care of her. Uma lived in the household and was paid a monthly salary of Rs 23,000.According to police, the theft came to light on June 9 around noon when Radha opened a cupboard to take out money for advance payment of a flat she intended to purchase. To her shock, she discovered Rs 67 lakh in cash, gold and silver ornaments were missing.Among the stolen items were 18 pairs of earrings weighing around 400 grams, a diamond necklace and earrings weighing 60 grams, several gold chains and bracelets, two coral chains, five back-beat gold chains, and over one kilogram of silver. Sujatha recently sold a plot in Electronics City for Rs 67 lakh and stored the cash in the cupboard with plans to buy another property.The family checked CCTV footage and discovered Uma had left the house with a bag at 10:30am and returned by 6:30pm. Only Sujatha was at home then.When confronted, Uma denied any involvement. The family then approached Chamarajpet police and filed a complaint. A senior police officer confirmed Uma’s arrest and said some of the stolen gold has been recovered.Radha told TOI Uma had gained the family’s trust by presenting herself as quiet and dependable. She knew where the keys to the cupboard were kept and allegedly used a short window of 15 minute to commit the theft while Sujatha was left unattended in the bathroom.
