BMC’s POSH transfers Mumbai doctor to non-teaching post

Mumbai: BMC’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) committee found a medical teacher from the civic-run KEM Hospital, Parel, guilty of harassing juniors and recommended his transfer to a non-teaching post for the next five years.Dr Ravidra Deokar from KEM Hospital’s forensics department was accused by six women of inappropriately touching their back, waist, or buttocks. In early April, the Bhoiwada police registered a case against Dr Deokar under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, that deal with sexual harassment and assault. The initial complaint was filed by a 32-year-old assistant professor, who accused Dr Deokar of making inappropriate comments when she wore a saree. Five other women then registered similar complaints.”As the case was highly sensitive, we directly sent it to the central POSH team at the BMC headquarters instead of allowing a hospital-level committee to first decide,” said a senior doctor. On Aug 22, the committee’s report was sent to the office of KEM Hospital Dean Dr Sangeeta Ravat, along with copies to the six doctors and Dr Deokar.Dr Ravat refused to comment on the matter, but it is learnt that the report is at present at the BMC medical education director’s office, and the course of action will be decided on Monday. The committee’s report also asked Dr Deokar to vacate his hospital quarters.
