‘Forced to spend Rs 40 lakh on wedding reception’: Newlywed woman dies by suicide in Bengaluru; husband, in-laws booked for dowry death | Bengaluru News
BENGALURU: A 26-year-old newlywed woman who allegedly attempted suicide died late Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The deceased has been identified as Ganavi, also known as Rashi, a resident of B Channasandra under Ramamurthy Nagar limits in east Bengaluru.Her husband Suraj, an employee of a private firm and resident of BEL Layout in Vidyaranyapura, north Bengaluru, has been named as the accused.
According to Ramamurthy Nagar police, Ganavi was found hanging at her parental home Wednesday. Family members rushed her to a private hospital, where she was admitted in a comatose state. Despite efforts, she succumbed on Thursday night. After a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family. Later, the family took the body to Suraj’s house and staged a protest, alleging harassment and demanding the arrest of his family members. Vidyaranyapura police intervened and persuaded them to take the body back.Based on a complaint filed by her father Shashikumar R, Ramamurthy Nagar police registered a case of dowry death against Suraj and his family. Shashikumar alleged that his daughter was subjected to dowry harassment soon after her marriage on Oct 29. He also claimed the family was pressured into hosting a wedding reception at Palace Grounds on Nov 23, spending nearly Rs 40 lakh.The couple had travelled to Sri Lanka last week for a 10-day honeymoon, during which the harassment allegedly continued. Distressed, Ganavi reportedly cut short the trip and returned to Bengaluru on Dec 21, staying at her parental home. Suraj and his family members are currently absconding, and police efforts are under way to trace them.
