Is your mask actually protecting you? Dentist explains how to identify disposable masks that meet medical standards |
With surging pollution, masks provide a protective layer against the harms. While N95 masks are the gold standard for protection, they are not necessarily comfortable for everyone. Many choose disposable/surgical masks over N95 masks, as they find them more breathable. But did you know, with a flood of masks available all around, many of them don’t meet the medical standards. Choosing the wrong masks can make the efforts go to waste. Highlighting this, a Chandigarh-based dentist Dr Shefali Garg recently shared a video explaining how you can spot the mask that meets medical standards that can actually protect you from aerosol exposure.
- The right will have a darker front side and a brighter back side, and a metal piece in the top.
- The dark front side is water repellent, that protects against aerosol particles.
- The folds in the front play an important role and are not just for design. These folds help collect aerosols, bacteria and other microorganisms.
- Masks that have downward folds are made as per medical standards.
- In the masks where you see the folds in the upward direction, you may not be able to collect, and protect against, harmful particles.
Note- Wearing the wrongly designed mask upside down will not help as the metal piece will also move down and lead to the exposure of harmful particles.
Common mistakes to avoid while wearing masks
Hygiene is the foremost important thing when it comes to wearing masks. Make sure to change the surgical mask after a few short uses, as washing disposable masks damages the filter layers. Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only.
