Bengaluru autorickshaw driver’s ‘note-swap’ trick at 2am costs family Rs 1,670

Bengaluru: An early morning ride from Majestic, central Bengaluru, turned into a nightmare for a family Sunday, revealing a sophisticated “note-swapping” trick allegedly operated by auto-rickshaw drivers.According to a post on X by the victim, Anantha Kallapur, the incident occurred around 2.15am when he, his wife, and daughter hired an auto-rickshaw to travel to Banashankari 3rd Stage. Upon reaching their destination, the driver reportedly ignored the usual fare of Rs 175 to Rs 200 for that route and demanded payment based on a “double meter”.

The situation escalated when Kallapur handed over a Rs 500 note in a poorly lit area. “With professional agility, the driver swapped the note for a Rs 100 note and claimed he was shortchanged,” Kallapur explained. When Kallapur gave a second note, the driver repeated the trick, insisting once again that he had only received Rs 100.Feeling exhausted and concerned for his family’s safety on the deserted street, Kallapur eventually paid a total of Rs 1,670 to end the confrontation. Although no police complaint was filed, he reported the incident to the Bengaluru city police via social media, sharing the auto-rickshaw’s registration number.
