Dissident Iranian film director Jafar Panahi has always drawn global attention,as much outside the circle of cinema as within. One of the very few directors to have won the world’s top prizes in his field – Berlin’s Golden Bear, Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Venice’s Golden Lion – he has never been in the race for an Oscar.
