Bengaluru Metro: Rs 1.2-crore deal cleared for detailed project report on link to Tumakuru

Bengaluru: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has awarded a tender for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) on the extension of Namma Metro to Tumakuru, despite ongoing discussions about its feasibility. The city-based Aarvee Engineering Consultants have been selected for the project at a total cost of over Rs 1.2 crore. The tender was issued last month, with a deadline of Nov 20 for interested parties to submit their bids. In addition to the chosen firm, two other parties expressed interest in the project. BMRCL expects the report to be completed and submitted within five months. As Tumakuru increasingly becomes an industrial suburb, industry representatives, politicians, and the govt have advocated for Metro extension to stimulate economic activity. According to the feasibility report, BMRCL anticipates that 15,000 passengers will use Metro services per hour in one direction. At present, the Green Line of Namma Metro operates between Madavara and Silk Institute, covering approximately 33.4km with 31 operational stations. The proposed corridor will include 25 elevated stations, beginning near Bangalore International Exhibition Centre in Madavara and passing through Neelamangala, Dabaspete, and Kyathasandra before reaching Tumakuru.Once the DPR is submitted, it will be forwarded to the central govt for approval. With the official commencement of DPR preparation, the Madavara-Tumakuru Metro project has entered a crucial phase, even as experts argue that Metro systems are primarily designed for intra-city travel rather than long-distance suburban routes.
