8 countries where Hindi is commonly spoken
Nepal has the second highest density of Hindi speakers, second after India. Around 8 million people in Nepal speak Hindi, but fewer than 80,000 have it as a mother tongue. Hindi, despite being widely spoken, is still not an official language in the country.
The Nepalese parliamentarians had in 2016 floated a proposal to recognise Hindi as an official language, after it was found that 80 per cent of the people spoke or understood Hindi. The predominance of Hindi in Nepal is related partly to cultural affinities with India, continuous borders and cross-border traffic, as well as the popularity of Indian television, films and music.
