Heritage tag for Savarkar Sadan: HC for govt stand

Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Friday asked the state govt for its stand on grant of heritage status to Savarkar Sadan building at Shivaji Park, Dadar (W), where late Vinayak Damodar Savarkar resided.Chief Justice Alokh Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne heard a PIL by Abhinav Bharat Congress through its president Pankaj Phadnis. It expressed apprehension that prior to the ground-plus-4-storey building being bestowed heritage status, it is likely to be demolished. In Feb 2009, the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee recommended grant of Grade II A status for it. Grade II A structures are of local importance and only internal changes are permitted. BMC’s advocate said state govt had written a fresh letter for submission of new recommendation. The judges said MHCC is the competent authority and they would ask it to take a decision. Phadnis said a decision was taken and final recommendation made. He referred to a letter in which BMC said the final recommendation approved by the civic chief to include Savarkar Sadan in the heritage list had been forwarded to principal secretary, UDD, on Aug 30, 2010. The judges then asked why state should not implement the decision. – Rosy Sequeira
