What’s the future of Tibetan Buddhism? Central to the question of Tibetan autonomy and religious freedom is the deliberation around the 14th Dalai Lama’s succession. In a July 2 statement, he affirmed that the institution of Dalai Lama will continue, putting speculation regarding its disbandment to rest.

He has also said his rightful successor would have to be found after his death, taking the idea of emanation, which would involve him publicly announcing and training a living heir, out of the picture.
