Section of interim govt favouring particular party, alleges Jamaat

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) has accused a section of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim govt of favouring a “particular political party”, ahead of parliamentary polls, and claimed the environment in the country is not conducive to hold a free and fair election. The JeI, which was a coalition partner of BNP during its 2001-2006 tenure in office, has now emerged as its main rival in the upcoming polls, with former PM Sheikh Hasina‘s Awami League barred from political activities and contesting elections under the Bangladesh’s anti-terrorism law. “Jamaat has received complaints from several areas alleging that govt officials are working in favour of a particular political party,” JeI chief Shafiqur Rahman said Monday.
