Hungarian Cinema Icon Béla Tarr Passes Away | TOI Shorts

Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, celebrated for landmark films like Sátántangó and The Turin Horse, has died at the age of 70. The Hungarian Filmmakers’ Association confirmed his death in a statement, saying the director passed away after a long and serious illness. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Tarr earned international acclaim for his stark black-and-white films, hypnotic long takes, and darkly comic explorations of despair and social decay. His longest work, Sátántangó, famously runs 439 minutes. Tarr retired from feature filmmaking in 2011 after releasing The Turin Horse.
