Telangana school closure: Sankranti 2026 holidays extended till this date; check official notice

Telangana school holidays 2026: The School Education Department, Telangana, has extended Sankranti (Pongal) holidays for all schools across the State till January 16, 2026, according to an official order issued on January 5, 2026.

Earlier holiday schedule and Kanuma optional holiday

According to the proceedings released by the Director of School Education, Telangana, schools were earlier scheduled to observe Pongal holidays from January 10 to January 15, 2026. However, the General Administration Department (GAD) has declared January 16, 2026 (Kanuma) as an optional holiday.

Official notice

Reason for extending Sankranti-Pongal holidays

Since January 16 immediately follows the Pongal festival, the department has decided to extend the holidays up to that date.“All schools under all managements shall reopen on January 17, 2026,” said Dr E Naveen Nicolas, IAS, Director of School Education, Telangana, in the official order.The decision has been taken in accordance with the Academic Calendar 2025–26 issued by the School Education Department and the General Holidays and Optional Holidays list for 2026 notified by the General Administration Department.

Instructions to district officials

District Educational Officers and Regional Joint Directors of School Education have been instructed to take necessary action as per the orders.Parents, students, and school administrations are advised to note the updated reopening date and plan accordingly.Note: For further updates and official communications, students and parents are advised to refer to notifications issued by the School Education Department of Telangana.
