Hostel warden scolds student for speaking Kannada, arrested | Bengaluru News
Bengaluru: A warden of AMC Engineering College’s hostel was arrested Sunday after a video went viral showing him scolding a student for speaking in Kannada and instructing him to speak only in Hindi. The accused, 48-year-old Suresh PV, a native of Kerala, was seen in the video telling students at the Bannerghatta Road campus that Kannada was not allowed on campus.
“It is an institution. If you want to speak in Kannada, you better speak at your house, not in the institution,” he said on New Year’s Day, according to the footage recorded by students. He further claimed that only he could decide which language students were allowed to speak on campus, insisting that his permission was required to speak Kannada. The video sparked outrage, prompting pro-Kannada organisations to stage a protest demanding his arrest. Following a complaint filed by protester Mahesh Hatti, police registered a case against Suresh on Sunday. He was remanded to judicial custody on Monday. In response to the protests, the college dismissed Suresh from his duties the same day.
