Mumbai: BEST bus mishap killing 4: Driver remanded to 14 days of judicial custody

Mumbai: The driver of the BEST bus that rammed into and killed four people and injured 10 outside Bhandup railway station on Monday night, was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Judicial Magistrate First Class, NG Vyas of the Mulund magistrate court on Saturday rejected the prosecution’s plea to extend arrested driver, Santosh Sawant (52), police custody by another five days. The police sought the custody on the grounds that Sawant’s psychological tests were underway and the follow up was expected to be conducted on Saturday and Monday. However, advocate Satish Rane, opposed the plea and said that the tests did not require Sawant to be in police custody. Sawant has been booked under BNS sections for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, rash driving, and negligence and endangering life, as well as under the Motor Vehicle Act.
