Job half-done: Bengaluru residents allege authorities asphalting roads without removing parked cars

Bengaluru: Despite ongoing resurfacing of roads with asphalt across Bengaluru, poor quality of work and lack of coordination have left many surfaces incomplete or damaged. Residents have the flagged issues, saying the newly laid asphalt is coming off within days.A road in Garvebhavipalya, under Bengaluru South city corporation’s Bommanahalli zone, was asphalted recently without removing cars parked along its sides, leaving areas occupied by the vehicles untarred. The asphalt on the rest of the road was so loose it could be pulled off by hand, said residents.

They also alleged that rollers were not used sufficiently on the newly laid tar, leading to the sides coming off. “We do not know who the contractor is. The road was laid overnight without using jelly stones or tar spray,” a local pointed out. Earlier this month, a photograph of a road asphalted around a parked towing vehicle went viral, prompting South corporation to clear the vehicles and complete the work. Residents pointed out on social media platforms, including X, that the roadwork was completed only because the photo went viral. A similar incident was highlighted in Koramangala, where Bengaluru South corporation completed the work after a photo of a parked car on a newly tarred road went viral on Dec 10, drawing attention to an untarred patch under the car. Not just the state of roads, residents are also highlighting the lack of coordination between different departments. Tagging the corporation, a resident posted photos of a stretch of Sir M Vishweshwaraiah Road in JP Nagar that was dug up on one side. “The road was asphalted two weeks back and was dug up today by another department. Do you guys feel no shame or moral guilt in wasting public money like this?” she posted on X.
