Will crack down on unauthorised road-cutting: Greater Bengaluru Authority chief

Bengaluru: Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has warned of penalties and criminal action against any utility or govt department found cutting roads without prior approval.GBA chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao, addressing an inter-departmental coordination meeting, said cutting roads without permission will no longer be tolerated. He said permission through MARKS software is mandatory for all such works. Rao directed officials from Bescom, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd, Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board, and Gas Authority of India Ltd to ensure strict compliance. The city corporations have been asked to promptly scrutinise applications received on the MARKS platform and issue permissions without delay, while departments have been instructed to complete works quickly and restore roads to proper condition.

To improve coordination, Rao said all departments must submit advance schedules of proposed road-cutting works and digitally mark the exact stretches and lengths on Google Maps, sharing details with all city corporations. “Lack of coordination is leading to repeated digging and public inconvenience. This has to stop,” he said. He also called for faster execution of feeder bus services by BMTC, parking facilities near transit hubs, skywalks and bus shelters. “These works directly affect commuters and must be completed within stipulated timelines,” he said.
