A new chapter began in India’s aviation industry on December 25, 2025 with the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in Maharashtra. India’s latest aviation sensation, developed by Adani Airports, has recorded a strong presence in just five days since its opening by catering to over 25,000 passengers. The footfall figures are quite impressive and signal strong travel demand in the region. As per reports, 26,021 passengers (roughly 12,431 arrivals and 13,590 departures) have already travelled between December 25 and 30 from NMIA. Some 5,500 passengers travelled only on the weekend. In total, NMIA handled 162 air traffic movements.
A promising beginning for the airport
Not one but many airlines were behind this record and strong start. On the first day, the airport managed 48 scheduled flights, serving passengers on domestic routes operated by major airlines including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air. On day four, the numbers crossed 21,000 passengers.

Located in Ulwe-Panvel, the main motive to build NMIA was to relieve congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai.
