Bengaluru: Bengalureans will get a chance to check whether people can freely walk on footpaths without stepping onto roads on Jan 1. Walkaluru, a 26-km footpath walk across the city, aims at highlighting the need for safe, continuous and walkable pedestrian infrastructure.

The initiative will trace a largely uninterrupted pedestrian-friendly route from RV Road Metro station in south Bengaluru to Sandal Soap Factory station near Orion Mall in the north. The day-long walkathon will begin at 7am and conclude around 4 pm, moving at a relaxed pace through landmarks such as Lalbagh, Jayanagar, Cubbon Park, Ulsoor Lake, Shivajinagar and Mehkri Circle before ending near Orion Mall. Planned breaks are scheduled every 5km for refreshments, and participants are free to join or leave the walk at any point along the route. Jointly organised by Walkaluru and Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the event will have civic officials and trained volunteer marshals walking alongside participants at different stretches to manage movement, ensure safety and observe on-ground footpath conditions. How to joinWith no formal registration process in place, the organisers have created a WhatsApp group to coordinate logistics and share updates. More than 300 people have already joined the group, indicating strong public interest and suggesting that participation on the day could be significantly higher.
