Karnataka PCC sets up panel to explore campus poll revival

Bengaluru: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has established a high-level committee to explore the revival of student union elections in colleges and universities across the state after decades of suspension. The nine-member panel will examine the framework and feasibility of conducting campus elections, with the goal of fostering leadership among students and reintroducing democratic processes.KPCC president and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar stated that the committee was formed in response to feedback from party leaders and workers who advocated for elected student bodies. “We all came from college elections and grew in politics. But it was stopped to avoid conflicts in the colleges, but we will bring it back, and we will see how we can take it ahead,” he said during the 140th Congress Foundation Day event Sunday. The panel, coordinated by medical education minister Sharanprakash R Patil, includes higher education minister MC Sudhakar, chief whip Saleem Ahmed, MLAs Rizwan Arshad and B Shivanna, legislative council members Puttanna, Basavanagouda Badarli, and HS Manjunath, along with Keerthi Ganesh. The committee is tasked with reviewing the election process, designing a suitable system, ensuring transparency safeguards, and assessing institutional readiness. It will also evaluate whether elections can be conducted without political affiliations. The committee is expected to submit its report within 15 days.If implemented, this move is expected to provide students with a platform to address academic and campus-related issues while nurturing future leaders through participatory governance.
