Top Congress Leaders Huddle Up In Delhi, Discuss Action Against Govt On G RAM G Law
Top Congress leaders met in Delhi for an extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting to deliberate on the current political situation and the party’s strategy against the government, marking their first major huddle after the party’s poor performance in the Bihar Assembly elections in November. The meeting focused heavily on the Centre’s decision to replace the UPA-era Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, a move strongly criticised by Congress leaders. The gathering was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, chief ministers of Congress-ruled states, PCC presidents, and senior leaders, including Shashi Tharoor amid ongoing differences with the leadership. The discussions also assumed importance in view of upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Veteran leader Digvijay Singh used the occasion to publicly urge Rahul Gandhi to push internal organisational reforms, calling for decentralised and pragmatic functioning within the party. Meanwhile, the BJP attacked the Congress, mocking the CWC as a “Congress Whitewash Committee” and questioning whether Rahul Gandhi would be held accountable for the Bihar defeat and what it termed a failed “vote chori” campaign, underscoring the growing political pressure on the party leadership.
