Bengaluru: A 39-year-old contract nurse working at Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research was allegedly murdered Wednesday night by her 25-year-old lover, who is also a nurse at the same hospital.The deceased has been identified as Mamatha HL, a resident of Pragathipura in Banashankari II Stage. The accused, Sudhakar, 25, hails from Kathriguppe in Banashankari III Stage. While Mamatha hailed from Chitradurga, Sudhakar is from Hassan. According to police, Mamatha was attacked with a surgical blade around midnight following an argument at her rented house. She died on the spot. The incident came to light around 11.30am Thursday when the house owner found her lying dead and alerted her roommate.

Mamatha had been working at Jayadeva Hospital for the past four years. She took the house on rent with a colleague six months ago. According to cops, Sudhakar had been in a relationship with Mamatha for about a year.Police said Mamatha wanted to marry Sudhakar. However, he allegedly viewed it as only a consensual physical relationship and had no intention of marriage. Around 10 days ago, Sudhakar allegedly got engaged to another woman through an arrangement made by his parents. After Mamatha learnt about it, she confronted him and demanded that he marry her and break off the alliance, police said.Sudhakar is said to have sought time from Mamatha to decide, but she refused to wait and allegedly threatened to make their relationship public. On Wednesday, when Mamatha’s roommate had gone to her native place, Sudhakar visited her house. During a heated argument over marriage, he allegedly attacked her with a surgical blade.Mamatha’s brother Shankar HL has lodged a police complaint.‘Accused feigned ignorance’Police said Sudhakar attempted to divert suspicion by acting innocent. Soon after Mamatha’s body was discovered, Sudhakar visited her house with other colleagues. He allegedly told police that Mamatha was close to him and he often helped her with errands, and even urged them to “trace the real culprit”. However, his conduct raised suspicion among investigators.Police checked CCTV footage from buildings in the vicinity, which showed Sudhakar moving around the area late Wednesday night. Further scrutiny of Mamatha’s call detail records revealed she had spoken to him several times on Wednesday, with the final call also made to him. Sudhakar was then taken into custody for questioning.Investigations revealed Sudhakar disposed of his blood-stained clothes and Mamatha’s mobile phone in a drainage near his residence. The items were later recovered by police. On Friday, he was remanded to judicial custody
