BENGALURU: A 28-year-old tenant allegedly set ablaze a 45-year-old grocery shop owner after she refused his proposal to marry her daughter, around midnight Tuesday at Bhovi Colony in Basaveshwaranagar. Geeta is currently undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital and is critical, police said.Police are are searching for the suspect, Muttu Abhimanyu, who ran a tea stall at the rented portion—a room and a toilet—of Geeta’s house. Abhimanyu had reportedly fallen in love with Geeta’s 19-year-old daughter, a IInd-year BBA student. When the daughter refused his proposal, Abhimanyu pressured Geeta to convince her to marry him, but she refused.
Police said: “Around 1am, Abhimanyu got into a fight with Geeta over the matter. When she refused again, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He often kept petrol in an empty water bottle for emergencies. Her daughter rushed in after hearing Geeta’s cries, but Abhimanyu had already fled. Neighbours helped shift Geeta to the hospital.”Geeta’s husband, civil contractor Vijay Kumar, passed away a few years ago.
