Bengaluru police visit paying guest accommodations, advise gadget safety & biometric locks | Bengaluru News
Bengaluru: As part of crime prevention month observed in Dec, KR Pura police conducted an awareness drive across paying guest (PG) accommodations in their jurisdiction, focusing on preventing theft of laptops, mobile phones and other valuables.Police teams visited around 100 PGs and interacted with inmates, most of whom are private-sector employees living in shared rooms. During the door-to-door campaign, officers highlighted common lapses that lead to thefts and explained basic precautions residents can take. The drive followed directions from city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, under which police stations across Bengaluru are holding localised awareness programmes based on the most frequently reported crimes in their areas.According to KR Pura police, laptop and mobile phone thefts from PGs are among the most common complaints. Many inmates work different shifts and often leave doors unlocked, assuming a roommate is inside. Thieves exploit such situations to enter rooms and steal valuables.Police noted that most PGs do not have security guards and are managed by owners or family members. While a few PGs have biometric entry systems, many rely only on gates with limited safeguards.“We advised inmates to keep doors locked and avoid leaving laptops or mobile phones unattended. PG owners were also asked to consider biometric locks,” a senior officer said. As many owners cited the high cost of hiring guards, police suggested inmates pool money to engage a guard through the owner.Police also urged inmates to install device-tracking apps, discussed cybercrime and drug abuse, and asked them to download the KSP app and save helpline numbers, including 112, 1930 and 1938.Police also conducted awareness programmes for bakery and pan shop owners and held sessions in govt schools.
