Karnataka govt acts against ‘bad apples’: 88 cops face criminal charges

Bengaluru: Amid growing concern over police involvement in criminal activities, the govt Thursday disclosed that 88 police personnel are facing criminal cases under provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Home minister G Parameshwara, in response to a question by MLC TA Saravan in the legislative council, said FIRs have been registered against the 88 cops. Some of the accused have already been arrested and suspended, while others are facing departmental inquiries under Karnataka State Police (Disciplinary Procedure) (Amendment) Rules, and could be dismissed if charges are proved. “We are taking steps for stringent action, including termination of service wherever warranted,” he said. 12 FIRs registered for anti-national slogansKarnataka has registered 12 cases related to “Pakistan Zindabad” sloganeering over the past three years, Parameshwara said. Responding to a question by MLC CT Ravi, the minister said six cases were registered suo motu by police and the remaining were based on complaints. Of these, chargesheets were filed in five cases, B (closure) reports in two, and investigations are continuing in three cases.He said a C report — where allegations are found to be neither true nor false — was filed in one case, and another is awaiting a report from Forensic Science Laboratory.
