Youth climbs temple building to steal hundis in Bengaluru, nabbed

Bengaluru: A 19-year-old was caught by locals Saturday afternoon while allegedly trying to steal donation boxes (hundis) from Sri Venkateshwara Temple in Bellandur. He was later handed over to police, who arrested him and released him on station bail.The accused, Lokesh alias Suraj Kumar, is a Bellandur resident. Police said he is “mentally unstable.”According to a complaint by a temple trustee, the incident occurred around 2.30pm when the priest spotted Lokesh trying to remove hundis and alerted the trustee. Lokesh allegedly used a ladder to climb onto the temple building and carried the boxes one by one, placing them on the roof before returning for more. He managed to remove three hundis and tried to break them open but was caught before damaging the locks.Locals tied him to a pillar inside the temple and informed police around 4.50pm. A Hoysala patrol team rushed to the spot and took him to the station. Police said CCTV cameras captured the entire act.During questioning, Lokesh’s father, a housekeeping staffer, told police his son is mentally challenged and has a history of similar behaviour. While acknowledging his condition, police registered a theft attempt case.
