Russia has rejected Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for referendum on ceding Donbas to Moscow. Vladimir Putin’s presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told a Russian daily that Donbas was a “sovereign Russian territory”, adding that Moscow would sooner or later establish control over the region. This comes after the Ukrainian president Zelensky told US President Donald Trump that he was ready to hold elections in the country, provided he gets a safe atmosphere to conduct polls. Trump, who has been frantically making efforts to broker peace, is reportedly ‘frustrated’ with the lack of progress in the initiative.
