NEW DELHI: Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Friday clarified his recital of RSS anthem ‘Namaste Sada Vatsale Matribhoome’ in the state assembly saying it was not a political gesture but an example of his study of rival organisations.“I am a born Congressman. I have researched all political parties. I know how RSS is building institutions in Karnataka and preaching to children. As a leader, I should know who my opponents are and who my friends are,” Shivakumar told reporters. He added, “politically, we have many differences. There is no joining hands. I will remain in Congress and lead Congress.”The clarification came a day after Shivakumar surprised members in the Assembly by singing the RSS anthem during a debate over the recent stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Responding to BJP MLA R Ashoka, who pressed the government to take responsibility for the incident, Shivakumar said he was aware of the BJP’s “tricks” and recited a few lines of the anthem.Addressing the House, he admitted that “a mistake had happened” at the stadium but stressed that the government had taken immediate action. “I am a member of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and just a cricket fan. Some mistake happened, but the government acted quickly. Was there no stampede at the Kumbh Mela?” he said.(With agency inputs)
